Dan comes to the organization with many years of experience in softball umpiring.  Dan’s pinnacles include Little League District, State, Regional, European Regional and Softball World Series, post-season High School Tournaments which include CIAC State Tournaments, College Conference Tournaments at the Division II & III levels. Dan continues to umpire at the High School and DI, DII and DIII College levels.  Dan also held positions on boards which include Umpire-In-Chief and Commissioner.

 

Rick Durham – Umpire-In-Chief

Rick being named as UIC for the NESUA is a culmination of 30 years of umpiring.  Starting as a baseball umpire, he had the privilege of working spring training for both the Mets and Dodger major league ball clubs.  The move to softball was an easy transition and became one of the top officials in the state and country.  His resume includes numerous CIAC state tournaments and finals where he completed his High School career.  Rick’s college career includes several post-season assignments at all three college levels which include over 22 Regional and Super Regional NCAA tournaments.

Mario Calabrese – Instructor/Evaluator

Mario started his umpire career in 1990 and like so many of us, started at the grammar school level and moved up through middle school and into the High School ranks.  Recognizing his hustle and quality, Mario was invited to umpire at the college level and currently umpires at the highest Division I level.  Some of Mario’s accomplishments include 18 years of CIAC State Tournaments, Several Division III, II & I Conference Tournaments, Regional & Super Regional Tournaments, and two NCAA National Tournaments.  

 

   William Schmoegner - Instuctor/Evaluator

Willy began his umpire career in 1986 working ASA Slowpitch in various Men’s Leagues and National Tournaments.  In 1988 he started in Fastpitch working middle school and then moving into the High School ranks.  In 2002 Willy attended a college tryout and was invited to umpire at the college level and now umpires at the DI, DII, and DIII levels.  Some of Willy’s accomplishments include 25 years of CIAC State Tournaments. Several Division III, II Conference Tournaments, DIII Regional Tournaments, and serving as the crew chief for two DIII Regional Tournaments.

 

   Dave Mattern – Instructor/Evaluator

Dave began umpiring High School in 2002 and has worked 3 Delaware and 3 Maryland State Finals.  He is a USA Softball "Elite" umpire and has worked 4 18U Gold Championships, 3 JO Cups and 2 Alliance Championships.  Dave was selected to work the plate in Baltimore, Maryland for the USA Women's Olympic Team on their "Tour Across America" before leaving for the postponed 2020 Olympic games.  Dave umpires for the ACC, Big 10, Big 12 and several other DI, DII and DIII college conferences.  He has umpired 22 NCAA post season Regional and Super Regional events as well as 2 National Championships.
